How It Works — The Process

A streamlined, secure workflow ensures your technology donations make maximum impact — safely, sustainably, and at scale.

  • Step 1: Fill Out the Form
Submit your preliminary info at the top of this page to kickstart the process. You can always make changes later.
  • Step 2: Finalize Your Commitment
We'll connect you directly with Computers 4 People to finalize your donation details, coordinate the pickup or drop-off, and answer any other questions you may have.
  • Step 3: Schedule Your Donation Pick-Up or Dropoff
Securely donate 10+ devices for free pickup at your preferred location, or drop off fewer than 10 at a local site.
  • Step 4: Your Data is Wiped
Every device is erased to NIST 800-88 standards, and donors can receive certificates of data destruction.
  • Step 5: Devices Are Refurbished & Reused
Computers are repaired, tested, and distributed to people in need through trusted nonprofits. Anything that can’t be reused gets recycled responsibly.

FAQ’s

  • What types of devices can we donate?

Computers 4 People accepts a wide range of technology, including: laptops and desktops, tablets, monitors, servers, phones, chargers, cables, and accessories. All devices, whether reusable or not, are handled responsibly. Non-repairable items are recycled through R2-certified partners.

  • Is it safe to donate company devices?

Yes. Data security is a top priority. Every device is wiped to NIST 800-88 standards, the industry benchmark for secure data destruction. Donors can request a certificate of data erasure for each device for compliance and peace of mind.

  • Do we need to cover shipping or pickup costs?

No. Pickup is free for donations of 10 or more devices. Smaller donations can be dropped off at local partner sites. The process is designed to be frictionless for participating companies.

  • Is our donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Computers 4 People is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All hardware donations are tax-deductible, and you’ll receive a receipt after your contribution is processed.

  • How will our donation make an impact?

Your donated tech is refurbished, matched with qualified recipients, and delivered through partners in communities across the U.S. Computers go directly to individuals and families who lack access to technology, including students, job seekers, seniors, and low-income households. We work through community organizations, schools, and nonprofits to ensure each device reaches someone who can use it to learn, work, and stay connected.

  • Can my company host a tech drive or volunteer event?

Yes! Computers 4 People can help coordinate logistics, promotion, and impact reporting for: office tech drives, refurbishment volunteer days, and other community delivery events. To explore further, fill out the pledge form on this page to get started.

  • Who at my company should coordinate this?

Typically, Software in Service donations are led by IT, operations, sustainability, or people teams — though anyone can initiate. Once you pledge, we'll connect you directly with Computers 4 People to handle logistics.

  • What condition should the devices be in?

Computers 4 People accepts devices in any condition — working or not. Usable devices are refurbished and distributed to people in need; others are responsibly recycled through certified partners.

  • How long does the process take?

For most corporate pickups, the entire process takes 1–2 weeks — from scheduling to secure data erasure. Timing may vary based on donation size and location, and data certificates may take 90 days maximum to receive.

  • Can we promote our company’s involvement?

Definitely. We encourage participants to share their involvement using #SoftwareInService. Insight Partners will also feature select company spotlights in our newsletters and social media channels to celebrate collective impact.

  • Can we get a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for the pickup?

Yes! Computers 4 People places a strong emphasis on comprehensive insurance coverage to protect our organization, team, and beneficiaries. After completing a donation form, send your property management's insurance requirements. Computers 4 People kindly asks for your patience as the process of obtaining additional insureds may sometimes span multiple days to ensure thorough coverage.

  • Can we make a financial contribution instead of donating devices?

Yes. Monetary contributions help Computers 4 People fund device refurbishment, parts, and shipping to families in need. After you fill out the form, you can discuss this further directly with Computers 4 People

  • What if my organization is fully remote?

That's totally fine! Computers 4 People can work with you and help coordinate the most streamlined way for your remote teams and employees to participate, donate, and get involved in a secure and efficient way.
